How do I change my FTP username and/or password?

Which FTP password you would like to change depends on which account it belongs to. Although there is only one master FTP account for any domain, each Web User or sub-domain can have it's own FTP account, allowing it to say separate from the main account and therefore stop people from editing other parts of the website.

This article is split into three parts, showing you how to change the username and/or password for each type of FTP account.

Note: Due to restrictions on all Mail accounts (i.e. those that start with M, such as the M105), access to Physical Hosting Management has been disabled. If you need to change the password on your Main FTP account (you can still change the password for Web Users as per these instructions), please Submit a Ticket to our Support Team who will deal with your request.

Master Account

The master FTP account it the only one that is required in Plesk, and is the only one that can access all the files in the httpdocs/ and httpsdocs/ direcories (as well as the web_user/ and subdomain/ directories, where there are not specified with their own account).

The username and password for this account is handled by the Setup icon for each domain:

  • First, log onto the Plesk Control Panel (all details can be found in the 'Account Details' e-mail, dispatched to you when your account is activated).

  • If you have logged on at the Client Level (this is the default level), please click on the name of the domain you wish to change the FTP details on. This will load the domain's settings page.

  • Now click on the Setup icon.

  • Under Preferences, the first three text-boxes are the FTP username and password (plus password confirm box). If you want to just change the password, enter the new password in to the New FTP password field, and then again into Confirm Password field before clicking on OK.

  • To change the username just change the value in the FTP Login field and click OK. Both the username and password can be changed at the same time.

As with most settings, this change is instant and therefore any new connections via FTP or SSH will need to use the new username and/or password.

Sub-domains

Sub-domains, unlike Web Users, can have their own FTP account, however this is optional and not a requirement - sub-domains can be managed by the master FTP account. To change the sub-domain's username and/or password you will need to visit the sub-domain's setup page.

  • First, log onto the Plesk Control Panel (all details can be found in the 'Account Details' e-mail, dispatched to you when your account is activated).

  • If you have logged on at the Client Level (this is the default level), please click on the name of the domain you would like to update. This will load the domain's settings page. Depending on your settings, you may be able to click on the actual sub-domain under the domain. This will take you straight to the setup page for the sub-domain.

  • If you can't see the subdomain, or have logged in at the Domain Level, click on the Subdomain icon. Then, from the list presented, click on the sub-domain you wish to setup.

  • To enable or disable the dedicated FTP account select Create a separate FTP user account for this subdomain or Use the FTP user account of the main domain respectively.

  • If Create a separate FTP user account for this subdomain is selected, you can enter or change the FTP details in the first three text-boxes available.

  • To add to change the username, use the FTP Login field.

  • To change or add a password, enter the password into the Password field and then again in the Confirm Password field.

  • Once completed, click OK.

Web Users

Web Users have their own FTP account, separate from the master FTP account and all sub-domains, and cannot be setup to use the same account as any other part of the site. To change, you must setup the user with the Web Users section of Plesk:

  • First, log onto the Plesk Control Panel (all details can be found in the 'Account Details' e-mail, dispatched to you when your account is activated).

  • If you have logged on at the Client Level (this is the default level), please click on the name of the domain you would like to update. This will load the domain's settings page.

  • Click on the Web Users icon. Then, from the list of users presented, click on the name of the web user you want to edit.

  • Once the password can be changes with a web user, as the name of the user is also the username for FTP as well.

  • To change the password, enter the new password in to the Password field and then again in the Confirm Password field.

  • Once completed, click OK.
