What is Web Space?


Web Space is the amount of storage that is allocated to your hosting account, and is measured in megabytes (Mb; millions of bytes) or gigabytes (Gb; billions of bytes). One gigabyte is the same as 1,024Mb.

How much web space do I need?


The amount of space you need will vary a lot depending on what you want to use the domain for and the complexity of your website. However, as an example, 1Mb can hold:

  • 85 e-mails; or
  • 50 web pages; or
  • 20 images; or
  • 2 photos.

If you're not sure how much space you need, you can start off on a basic plan and upgrade as and when needed.


How is web space calculated?

The amount of space you are using is calculated by adding the together the space used by each of the following:

  • website files (including sub-domains);
  • web user files;
  • log files;
  • e-mails;
  • mailing lists;
  • databases; and
  • any backup files.

This is done each morning at around 4am. So, if you add or remove any files during the day, it won't be refelected in the totals until the next morning. Also, if you go over your limit, our systems will let you know by e-mail.

How much web space I am using?

Plesk provides a summary of the space used when you log on to Plesk (look to the right of each domain under 'Disk Usage'). However, it also provides an in-depth reporting tool which shows a breakdown of the amount of bandwidth and space you have used.

The view, click on the name of the domain in Plesk and then click on the Report icon.
