How do I update my domain's contact details?

It is always important to keep your contact details up-do-date on your domain, as, under ICANN (the Internet's governing body) regulations, it is an offence to knowingly register a domain with invalid details, or not to keep them up-to-date.

It is also advisable to keep these details up-to-date as notices & information, such as renewal notices, relevant to your domain will be sent to the details you have provided.

Unless you have requested to opt out of the WHOIS database, any e-mail address associated with it may receive more Spam. We therefore recommend you either use a different e-mail address than your normal day-to-day address or make sure that you have effective Spam control setup.

Updating your domain's contact details

Remember that your ModernBill login details can be found at the bottom of your last invoice from us. If you have not changed your details since signing up, you can also use your Account Details e-mail.

Also, we currently have two installations of ModernBill due to integration issues. If you are not sure which copy to use, please go to the Support page and click on the icon that is relevant to you, or Submit a Ticket to the Billing Team.

  • Log onto ModernBill using your e-mail address and password.

  • You will now see your account's Dashboard. This contains a brief overview of your account.

  • From the menu, hover over My Sites & click on My Domains.

  • You will now be shown a list of domains you have registered with us. Click on the name of the domain you want to change the details on.

  • The next few pages will take a little longer to load as our system will need to talk to our registrar to fetch and submit data.

  • When loaded, click on Modify contact info to the left-hand side.

Depending on the domain extension (i.e. .co.uk or .com), there can be up to five sections for your contact details:

  • Billing Contact
This is our contact details and cannot be modified. However, if Aux Billing Contact is filled (see below), then those contact details will override these on a WHOIS output. This information is here as we are the registrar of the domain.

  • Registrant Contact
This is for the contact details of the owner of the domain (i.e. the person it was registered for). If you are updating a Nominet-registered domain (i.e. any .uk domain), then this section cannot be modified either - any attempt to do so will return an error. To change this information you must contact Nominet directly (there is a small charge associated with this).

  • Admin Contact
This is for the details of the person responsible for administering the domain (normally this is the same as the Registrant Contact above).

  • Tech Contact
This is for the details of the person responsible for managed the site and/or the server (again, normally this the same as the Registrant Contact above).

  • Aux Billing Contact
This is for the details of the person responsible for the billing of (i.e. paying for) the domain (and is normally the same as the Registrant Contact above).

You cannot change the Billing Contact, as that is managed by us. However, you are free to change any of the details for the remaining four contacts (unless other restrictions apply).

  • Once you are happy with the changes you have made, click Submit changes.

  • If you return back to the page with any errors, please correct those errors and click Submit changes again.

You have successfully updated your domain contact details.
