What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the amount of data sent to and received from the Internet by the server, and is measured in bytes, usually in megabytes (Mb; millions of bytes) or gigabytes (Gb; billions of bytes). One
gigabyte is the same as 1,024Mb.

Every time you send or receive an e-mail (via our server) or someone visists your website, our systems make a log of the amount of data transferred. Early each morning, all the previous day's values are added together and updated in Plesk. At the end of the month, the total is your bandwidth.

How much bandwidth will I need?

The amount of bandwidth that is needed will vary a lot depending on what you use your website for and the content of the website. However, as an example, for 1Mb you can transfer:

  • 85 e-mails; or
  • 50 web pages; or
  • 20 images; or
  • 2 photos.

If you're not sure how much bandwidth you will need, you can start off on a basic plan and upgrade as and when needed.

How much bandwidth am I using?

It is important to remember that during your first few days you will need to upload your whole website, configure it, create e-mail accounts, etc. and therefore you should take this into consideration when reviewing your first months bandwidth usage.

Plesk provides a summary of the bandwidth used when you log on to it (look to the right of each domain under 'Traffic'). However, Plesk also provides an in-depth reporting tool which shows a breakdown of the amount of bandwidth and space you have used.

The view this, click on the name of the domain in Plesk and then click on the Traffic icon.
