What is Frontpage?

Frontpage is a web site development program provided by Microsoft. It allows users to create websites without needing to know any HTML, with the end result being a fully functional web site that is easy to upload and maintain.

The core concept of Frontpage is ease of use, as the websites are built using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. It is an extremely popular development tool for those just starting their own website. However, a major draw back of Frontpage is that the ease of use comes at the cost of the code it produces. Frontpage websites tend to be very poorly coded, with much of it repeated and/or un-necessary or overly complex.

While Frontpage is an ideal first website development program for those with experience of other Microsoft Office products such as Word, if you have a good understanding of HTML then Macromedia's Dreamweaver may be more suitable. Dreamwaeaver is a more complicated program to use, but it produces cleaner code, has far greater control for larger websites, while also supporting some scripting languanges and database integration.
