Uptime is the term used to record how long a server has been running over a period of time. Shown as a percentage, it's normally measured either over a year or on a monthly basis.
While all hosting companies will aim for the 100% uptime mark, there are occasions when it is necessary to have some downtime. Server maintenance and software upgrades will be neccessary during the life of a server to make sure that the server is secure and stable. At JAB Web Solutions, we aim to keep this downtime to a minimum and is normally no longer than a few minutes (usually while the server reboots).
It is standard practise for hosting companies to offer an uptime guarantee of between 99% and 99.9%, although the difference between the two percentages is around 80 hours over the course of the year.
