All domain transfers are handled via our Order Wizard - just enter the domain you would like transfered to us and pay any relevant fees as required. Although most domains do not have a transfer fee, you are instead required to pay to extend the registration of a domain for either one or two years.
For instructions on how to transfer in .uk domains (such as .co.uk), which are managed by Nominet, please see our article:
Security issues
While Nominet domains use a push system where you must change the IPS tag at the old registrar, all other domains use a pull system.
When you select a domain to be transferred, the new registrar requests that the old one release it and send it to them automatically. This poses a problem as if anyone wanted, they could just go to another registrar and select to transfer the domain - they don't need to be the owner in order to just take control!
To prevent this there are two common security methods: Locking and EPP.
Locking
When a domain is locked, it can only be kept at the current registrar. Any attempts to transfer it out and onto another registrar will fail; the domain must be unlocked by the owner before initiating the transfer at the new registrar.
For information on how to unlock a domain, please contract your current registrar. If your domain is registered with us, please see our article:
EPP
EPP is a newer form of protection and is an attempt to require manual authorization by the owner of the domain as part of the transfer process. When you select an EPP-protected domain (e.g. .biz, .org, .info and .us domains) to be transfered, the new registrar will ask you to enter a unique code (sort of one-time password for the domain) which will be used to authorize the transfer.
In theory only the true owner of the domain will be able to obtain this code and therefore be able to transfer the domain.
For more information on how to obtain the EPP for your domain, please contact your current registrar. If your domain registered with us, please see our article:
Auto-verification
Many registrars (including ours) utilize an auto-verification procedure where an e-mail will be sent to the registrant of the domain to authorize transfer of the domain (this is done after the EPP has been entered for EPP-domains).
If the registrant doesn't respond to this e-mail (or refuses the request), the transfer will fail. If you have any questions about this, please Submit a Ticket to our Support Team who will discuss them with you.
Nameserver & Contact details
Any domain that has entered to be transferred to us will created in our account with it's current contact details and nameserver settings; you cannot change this information as part of the transfer initiation.
Only once the transfer has been completed can you access your domain's Control Panel in ModernBill and update your nameservers. For more information on how to do this, please see the following articles:
